I was once told that you can not pay yourself into the Southern Gospel Music Industry. Not so! You can pay to have your songs spotlighted on a network of Stations. Even pay for an Artist Breakout Party and interactive advertisement on the web. You can pay for a whole page advertisement or an article about your ministry in one of todays prominate Gospel News Magazine.
I have read many blogs about the problem with Southern Gospel Music Radio and the "no talent" or what they would call "mediocur talent" played on gospel radio. Most of that problem is caused by what I stated in the previous paragraph. I am sure if you are an artist you have gotten the same emails from companies like I have. The industry is getting so money hungry. One company emailed an offer to be played on many stations along with a live listening party and of course advertisement on their website. The price was way out of my budget. Another company and I must add a very well respected and prominent record company made an offer to me to put a song on their next compilation along with three months radio promotions. I will not name the two companies or their fees, but I will tell you that the cost between the two would pay for me a brand new Cd and radio promotions for three months with most record companies. I just wonder if the company with all the radio stations would play my Cd if I sent them a Cd for free. If I am talented enough to play on you stations for a fee, than I am good enough to play on your stations for free.
I really liked this email that I got. A certain gentleman emailed me to tell me that I was extremely talented in his words and he wanted to know where I have been all of this time. When I emailed him to let him know that I did not have the funds to spend with his company, I deffinately did not get a response. I emailed him back to ask if I could use his quote about my music on my website. After all this was one of the best in the business and who would not want a quote from him about your music on your website. Of couse I did not receive a return email back granting me that permission.
Do not get me wrong, I know it is a busness and businesses have to make money. Many new up and coming artist and uknown artist do not have the funds to pay for some of the "going over the board prices" that are ask of them. Most live from one booking to the next. The money that we might get from one booking is put back in to use for travel and expenses for the next booking. If you think I have talent give me a break to start with and build from there. If you do not think I have talent and you just email or call me for business just because you need some more clients or money, please do not bother to contact me. If you think I am good enough to pay you to get played on your stations, than I am good enough to be played on you stations for free. I would be glad to send you a Cd for free at my expense. People use the terms "advertisement" or "sponsors" to get by legally without calling it payola. I still call it payola if I am having to pay to play. Please do not use or abuse the not so known artist. You are using the name of Jesus to get your business. Why not consult in Him for all of your decisions.
After stating all of this, I must say that there is a few honest people in the Southern Gospel Business that I have come accross that I have and will do business with.
God Bless. Until next time.
